So... I wanted to start a new character modelling project.

And for some reason my instagram timeline has been filled with all these beautiful renders and posts about armor. I couldn't resist anymore, so I gave in. This was my first mistake...

I decided to center my new project all around armors, I went in straight away not knowing what to expect.

Here are some of the beautiful references I gathered along the way!

I started the process by grabbing my previous female basemeshes and sculpted a new character from there.

Everything was going as smooth as usual.

And then it was finally time to model the armor.

After I tried modelling only one of the shoulder plates, I immediately realised that I actually didn't know anything about modelling hard surface objects (which is basically the whole armor)

Loot at the head gear below, it took 5 tries to decently model it and I'm not still sure I like it or if it will make it to the final render, but we are learning new things though 🥲

My Biggest Help on the Project So Far Have Been:

Finding better references: I'm using a lot more references than I showed you above, if I need to model something specific, I'll head on over to google to search for references from every angle (very necessary). Make sure you're using references, a lot more than you think when working on your own projects.
Youtube Tutorials: But not just any tutorials. You know those times you're scrolling on youtube & you see that tutorial that you know you will never use but you still watch it anyway? yes those ones! I have been able to reference back to those hard surface modelling videos and steal their modelling techniques & it has really helped a lot.
Also not bothering about quad geometry: I know the situation of this model and I know it won't be animated or doing anything crazy, so I've taken the executive decision of using triangle where I see fit & not really bother about having sexy quad topology all the time.

I'm yet to add all the fine details & materials to the model but we'll get there eventually.

I hope some of these tips will help you out in future projects or inspires you to start a new project!
