Blender tutorials, innit?

They’re absolute lifesavers when you're starting out with character modeling.

And let me tell you, one of the best gems I ever found on YouTube was Darrin Lile’s Character Modeling Tutorial Series

This tutorial series helped me get my feet into character creation & modelling.

And once I had completed this series and a few follow-along tutorials successfully, I felt ready to move forward.

I genuinely thought I could create my first character in blender without having to rely on any tutorial.

I was sooo wrong!

Anytime I tried to do something by myself, it ends up looking terribly bad.

It felt so hard to reach a point where I could create things on my own without relying on tutorials.

I kept on having to go back to the tutorials to know which keys they pressed or exactly which tools they used.

I thought it was a learning curve kinda thing.

But time kept passing by and the only way I knew how to create anything in Blender was by copying tutorials.

I was stuck in tutorial hell.

This wasn't necessarily a bad thing, but it limited me.

Because I had ideas in my head that I couldn't execute on.

But I stumbled upon something that changed this forever..

While watching a Grant Abbitt tutorial on Youtube.

He said to 'pause the video and have a go at the modelling exercise by myself'

I honestly thought I might not be able to complete the modelling exercise.

But damn! to my own surprise, I quickly completed the exercise with a lot of confidence.

Then it hit me: I had been learning from tutorials the complete wrong way.

There was one simple change I had to make all this while...

And the change was this:

Instead of copy pasting every step & button click I saw in a tutorial, just steal the technique used to get to the final result.

Stealing the technique is THE KEY.

Let me explain this practically.

Let's say I want retopologize the face of a character

All I need to know is how & where to define proper edgeflow

The rest of retopology is filling in the blank spaces

Instead of copying every button click & vertex extrusion from a retopo tutorial

Steal the retopology technique.

Another example:

I want to sculpt the head of my character from a concept I drew up

All I need to do is to understand the forms/shapes that make up the head

And sculpting it is as easy as pushing and pulling those form/shapes into place

Do you get the concept??

Once I adjusted to the concept of using techniques to get to my final results I never needed to rely on tutorials again!

Just steal the damn technique!

After I figured this out.

I went back to every complete character modelling time lapse videos I could find on YouTube from channels like FlyCat, Danny Mac & the likes.

Just trying to steal the techniques they used to get to their final result.

But time lapse videos on YouTube often skip some important part of the character modelling process.

And it wasn't very easy finding process videos that showed the complete process of character modelling.

And again the struggles of actually learning from time lapse videos because they are way too fast.

But I eventually gathered and learned the techniques but it did take me a very long time.
